Gay sends Grizzlies over Magic

Basketball Betting Lines

10/31/2008 - Memphis, TN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Rudy Gay scored a game-high 29 points, including the game-winner as time expired to lead the Memphis Grizzlies in an 86-84 victory over the Orlando Magic in the team's home opener.

O.J. Mayo added 17 points and six rebounds for the Grizzlies, who bounced back from an 82-71 drubbing by the Houston Rockets on Wednesday in their season- opener. Marc Gasol chipped in 10 points, while Darrell Arthur hauled in 10 boards in the win.

Rashard Lewis paced the Magic, who lost their season-opener 99-85 to Atlanta on Wednesday, with 23 points. Hedo Turkoglu added 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Dwight Howard had 14 points to go with 14 rebounds in defeat.

The teams traded baskets and the lead changed hands until a pair at the charity stripe from Hakim Warrick knotted the contest up at 84-84 with 68 seconds to play.

On the ensuing Orlando possession, Keith Bogans had his shot blocked and Memphis brought the ball down and, after a missed shot from just inside the three-point line, called a timeout with 24.1 ticks showing on the clock.

The Grizzlies inbounded the ball and Gay controlled the dribble before driving to the lane and pulling up just inside the right arc. His shot caromed off the back of the rim and out of bounds to stop time with 2.8 left.

Following a timeout, a lob pass intended for Howard under the rim was intercepted by Kyle Lowry, who had the presence of mind to call a timeout with 1.9 to go.

Lowry then inbounded the ball to Gay, who was perfectly positioned in the right corner, just inside the three-point marker. Gay's rainbow shot over Bogans dropped in as time expired to give the Grizzlies a dramatic victory.

Memphis held a slight 26-25 lead after the first quarter.

A pair of free throws from Turkoglu gave the Magic a 36-35 lead, but Mayo and Gay nailed back-to-back jumpers to give the home team a three-point lead with 4:49 left in the half.

Up by a point about 2 1/2 minutes later, a Turkoglu fade away sparked an 11-0 end to the half, sending Orlando to a 55-43 halftime cushion.

A Bogans three-pointer made it 60-45 with about 9 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter, but Darko Milicic's dunk sparked a 16-6 run for Memphis. Gay and Mike Conley hit consecutive jumpers, and Mayo's trey closed it out with 2:44 left. The surge made it a five-point game, 66-61.

The Magic held a 68-61 lead heading into the final stanza and, falling behind by 11 points early on, Gay's pullup jumper sparked a 13-0 Memphis run that gave the Grizzlies the lead. Gay had eight points on the surge and as Lowry's layup fell, it was 76-74 with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in favor of the home team.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season.  What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season.  Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all.  Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13).  Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two.  Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury.  Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven.  Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury.  Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
